Shields and bucklers

A buckler is a smaller hand-held shield, yet diameters and weights still vary considerably within this group. Alongside compact bucklers there is a larger targe-style shield. Construction, thickness, grip and stated purpose must be checked for the specific model, especially for training use.

Examples are Plain Buckler, Cold Steel Medieval Buckler, Soldier’s Buckler Battlecry, Cold Steel Soldiers Targe and Mini Buckler. Diameters start at about 23 cm and reach 49 cm. Selected products list thickness, weights from 620 g to 2.25 kg and 1065 steel.

First establish whether the model is intended for training, collecting or display. Compare diameter, weight and thickness with instructor requirements. Grip shape and mounting affect hand fit, but must be confirmed in the detailed description and photographs of the selected product.

Checks before training

Before practice, inspect the edges, surface, grip and every mounting point. A dent, crack or loose component requires assessment before further use. Clean and dry metal after exposure to moisture. Store shields securely so they cannot fall or tip over.
