Kendo shinai

A shinai is a bamboo training sword used in kendo according to the rules of the group and organisation. Sizes 36, 37, 38 and 39 correspond to stated lengths, but the number alone does not describe weight or suitability for the practitioner. The group also contains a nylon case, which is an accessory rather than another shinai size.

The four main sizes have listed overall lengths of 107, 112, 117 and 119 cm. Some designations add the letter A, so compare the complete variant name. The case has separate dimensions of 120 by 9 by 8 cm and should be matched to the measured equipment.

Size under kendo rules

Confirm the shinai size with the instructor, taking account of group rules, age and training requirements. Do not base the choice on height alone. For a case, measure the complete shinai and make sure the closure does not press on either end.

  • size approved by the instructor
  • overall length
  • complete variant designation
  • case matched to the dimensions

Pre-practice inspection

Before every practice, inspect the bamboo slats, bindings, handle and tips. A splinter, crack or loose component requires removing the shinai for assessment. Dry it after training and store it in a ventilated place. Place it in the case only after cleaning.
