WWI M1916 Avenger French Fighting Knife Windlass

The "Le Vengeur de 1870" dagger, often called "The Avenger of 1870," emerged from a desire for retribution following France's defeat by Prussia in 1870. Its straightforward and functional design ensured its continued use through World War II, highlighting the enduring need for close-quarters combat weapons in any army, even in the age of firearms. Encounters at close range are unavoidable, making such tools essential. Illustrating a twisted form of admiration, Germany seized significant numbers of these knives after conquering France and deployed them in Norway. Today, authentic "Le Vengeur de 1870" daggers can fetch prices exceeding $250 in the antique weapons market. Its blade design served as the inspiration for the US M1918 Trench Knife, famously incorporating a knuckle grip. This robust replica mirrors the original, featuring a 6-3/4" blade and an overall length of 11". A steel scabbard completes the faithful reproduction.
